Spring Evaluations

The purpose of this event is to provide students at all levels with the opportunity and experience of preparing and performing for adjudication. While our judge is highly qualified; these auditions are friendly and positive so that even the youngest may participate. Each student will receive a written evaluation and either a Gold, Silver, or Bronze Medal. The student performance will be one on one with the adjudicator and parents will not be allowed in the room.

There must be at least 3 students registered for a particular instrument for us to provide an adjudicator specifically for that instrument.

Programs: Students may choose to perform one of the following 3 programs:

  1. Standard – 2 solo pieces
  2. Advanced – 1 long solo piece in lieu of 2 solo pieces in order to stay within the allotted time limits (for advanced students).
  3. Duets – Students may choose to play either 1 or 2 duets, or a combination of 1 duet and 1 solo. Both students must register and both are eligible to receive and individual evaluations and medal.

Piano and instrumental division level and time limits:
Preparatory: Minimum 8 measures. Not to exceed 6 minutes
Levels 1 – 2: Not to exceed 6 minutes.
Levels 3 – 5: Not to exceed 10 minutes.
Levels 6- 10: No longer than 15 minutes.
Participant: Student receives judge’s comments without numerical scoring.

General Guidelines & information:

  • Students must have studied with their teacher for at least 3 months.
  • No photocopies of music are allowed unless it is purchased online and accompanied
    by proof of purchase.
  • Students provide an original copy of their music for the judge.
  • Measures should be marked at the beginning of each line.
  • Teacher or student’s name must not be found on music or disclosed at any time.
  • Teachers should review all video submissions before they are submitted.
  • Teachers are responsible to pick up and distribute medals for their students.
  • Evaluation sheets will be scanned and e-mailed to teachers the Monday after the
    event. Medals and original evaluation sheets will be made available for teachers to
    pick-up within the following 2 weeks of event.
  • Vocal and non-keyboard instrumentalists must supply their own accompanist. o The judges’ decisions are final.
  • Teachers will distribute medals and evaluations to their own students

Guidelines for instrumentalists:

  • Music memorization is at each teacher’s discretion. However, to be eligible for a Gold Medal, student must perform the piece from memory (applies only to piano solos and voice students).
  • Repertoire cannot be changed after registration.
  • Original compositions by any composer are acceptable. No simplified versions or
    arrangements except for very young students.
  • One movement of a sonatina, sonata or concerto, or one part of a set of variations, suite or prelude and fugue represent 1 solo.
  • Duets are not required to be memorized.

Guidelines for vocalists:

  • Songs and arias must be sung in the original language and original key. o Strophic songs need a minimum of three verses.
  • Changes in language and key are allowed for Vocal Musical Theater.
  • Recorded accompaniments are allowed for vocalists
