Sonata / Sonatina Festival

Rules, Dates and Deadlines

The purpose of the Sonatina/Sonata Festival is to encourage students to perform and study the Sonatina/Sonata form. Students will be evaluated in a performance open to a small audience limited to family/friends of performer and students who will be performing before and after.

Fee $20

 

Students will:

  • Be evaluated by one adjudicator
  • Receive numerical ratings
  • Receive a certificate of participation
  • Be awarded a trophy for ratings of 5 and above*

 

Requirements:

  • Prepare one movement only (no repeats, unless selection is very short). If the single movement is under a minute, the student may prepare two movements, but the total time is not to exceed two minutes.
  • Any piece with the title “Sonata” or “Sonatina” may be used.
  • *Pianists do not need to memorize their music to participate; however, trophies for ratings of 5 and above are only awarded to pianists with memorized pieces.
  • Provide judges with an original copy of their music (no photocopies). Students with photocopies will be evaluated but are ineligible for a trophy.
  • Teachers and students/parents should refrain from speaking with the adjudicator on the day of the event to maintain professionalism for all participants. o There is a 10-minute time limit (if longer, please make cuts).
  • A Media Release Form is included on the online registration form o Teachers should inform parents of their consent at registration.

 

Teachers are required to assist at the Sonata Festival when in person:

  • Teachers with up to 5 students are required to work one recital.
  • Teachers with 6-12 students are required to work two recitals.
  • Teachers with over 12 students are required to work the full day.

Registrations must be submitted online by the deadline. Registration is not considered complete unless all information and full payment is received. If you have any questions, please email the chairperson.

  • Teacher’s Name
  • Teacher’s Phone
  • Teacher’s Email address
  • Student’s Name
  • Student’s Age
  • Student’s CM Level* (approximate)
  • Instrument
  • Composer(s) First and Last Name, as well as the name of any arranger.  (Please list both the original composer, and the arranger's names if applicable).
  • Piece (Key, Opus #, Tempo or Movement, other information)
  • Time of Piece (please be exact)
  • Accompanist
  • Siblings to be Scheduled at the Same Event
